Message from Father Thomas Sparacino

Many have asked, particularly the daily Mass crowd, why I add: “Make it a great day”, at the end of Mass.  You probably know by now, in the short amount of time that we have been family, that I am very family oriented.  I would have to say 99% of what I learned about being a priest, let alone life, I learned from my family and friends.  My Uncle Edger, who now we pray resides in heaven, would always respond to people who said, have a great day, by saying “If I don’t it’s my fault.”  He taught me that each day has to be made great for the Lord.  Do you, do I have what it takes to make it a great day?  What makes it a great day?  How do you make it a great day?

From the Gospel of Luke we are challenged by Jesus not to store up the riches of our faith but to use them to make each day great.  What makes each day great is what matters to God.  It’s about paying attention to what God wants of us and for us.  For this we have to take the time to listen — to hear where he is directing us, to what he wants us to say, to what he wants us to do, to fully live in a committed relationship with the Lord.  He has already given us riches or gifts.  What good are they if they are stored up inside, unused like those wedding presents that have been in the basement for so long.

What matters to God, is you.  Through Him, with Him and in Him, you are made great.  To make a day, a week, a month, a year, a life great, is trusting in what the Lord has already given us, new life.  Even when we fall into ourselves and sin, the Lord makes us great again and again and again, through His unconditional love and mercy. So go ahead and do it, spend time this week thinking about the gifts the Lord has given you.  Then do something with them.  Don’t allow His gifts to become like those wedding or birthday gifts that you have
received and are still in a box.  Use them to build up the Kingdom for Him, for others and for you.  Make it a great day! (each day) and if you don’t, it’s your own fault.

In His joy, make it a great week!
Fr. Tom
